Intensive Employment Training Initiative
The Intensive Employment Training Initiative is a new initiative, in the development stages, that will focus on connecting homeless and low income individuals with education and intensive career training with the intent that it will assist them in obtaining jobs, increasing income, and becoming more self-sufficient. Journey Home and regional partners hope to successfully replicate the CT Works LIFE Program model which ended in 2007 and proved to be successful for both low income and homeless participants.
In order for people experiencing homelessness or receiving rental subsidies to encounter upward mobility in their job fields, it is essential to help provide them with the resources to enter into more advanced placements. Opportunities for career advancement are much more abundant in fields which require more education or specific training. This mobility is reflected in salary, higher wages and benefits which will assist homeless individuals in obtaining housing and individuals receiving Section 8 in moving out of subsidized housing. Through education and career specific training members from both groups can become more autonomous and require less government aid. The employment initiative would provide crucial supports and other incentives to participants so that they are able to focus on education and career goals. One goal of the program, in addition to increased economic security for participants, is to see upward mobility in housing situations, with those experiencing homelessness becoming housed and those receiving subsidies being able to move into unsubsidized housing.
The proposed training model will assist participants in multiple different ways by addressing barriers to schooling and career training as well as providing them with important knowledge and skills to help them succeed in a new career. Participants will receive comprehensive employment case management services to ensure they are taking necessary steps to reach their full potential and personal goals. Program participants will also receive practical incentives for attending workshops, completing interviews and completing other steps in the program.
